Handmade Roman Blinds

The first thing you need to decide when measuring for roman blinds is whether you want the blind to be inside the recess or outside. This is down to your personal preference, but ask yourself these simple questions: Is there enough space for the blind outside the recess? How much light do you want to block out? Do you still want to see the sill once the blind is down? We are more than happy to talk through these decisions with you if you would like a professional opinion.

inside recess

inside recess

Width:
⦁ Measure the width in several places, especially at the very top and bottom.
⦁ Note the narrowest measurement of the recess. Reduce this figure by 1cms and this is your finished blind width.

Drop:
⦁ Measure the drop in several places, especially the outside edges.
⦁ Note the shortest measurement.
⦁ This recess figure is your finished blind drop.

outside recess

Width:
⦁ Check for obstructions and decide how much you would like the fabric to overlap the recess edges (minimum of 5cms each side is recommended).
⦁ Measure and note the decided width. This figure is your finished blind width.

Drop:
⦁ Check for obstructions and decide where you would like the top and bottom of the blind to start and finish (10-15cms above the recess and a minimum of 5cms below the recess are a good guide).
⦁ Measure and note the decided drop. This figure is your finished blind drop.

Advice

Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s

Use Light-weight fabrics like taffeta, medium-weight fabrics like cottons, linen and their blended varieties, can give crisp and sharp folds to your drapes.
use Heavier fabrics like velvet, chenille and pure wool can provide professional pleats and neat folds.
pair up your blind with curtains and/or sheers along with your functioning blind for a layered effect.

Don’ts

Don’t use traditional fabrics in Roman blinds for areas such as the bathroom as they cannot be used in damp places.
Don’t forget to maintain your blinds with a simple steam clean.
Don’t forget to specify outside recess for elongating the look of your window, or inside recess for ease of use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we have a vast range of metal and wooden poles and tracks from Silent Gliss rangers which are corded as well as uncorded. We offer the metropole wave range in an array of colours and styles.
We make our blinds lined, interlined, or black-out bonded depending on the finish you are after. We always recommend that blackout lining for all roman blinds as they block out the light and also add structure to the aesthetic of the blinds.
